Goals, Methods, and Reasons behind the Project

여러분들, 안녕 하세요.

Today I am embarking on an effort to make a high-quality, community-created set of Korean language vocabulary for intermediate level and higher.  I am striving to make this project as highly successful as possible with two reasons in mind.  The first reason is to enhance the online Korean language learning community, which right now is lackluster in comparison to the numerous resources available for other languages, such as Japanese.  The second reason is to spread the use of the excellent open-source vocabulary study program, called Anki.  While Anki enjoys a large following of Japanese learners, there is little to no Korean community present for Anki.  I want to change this for the better.  Although Anki is one of the major reasons I am beginning this community project, I will wait until a later post to introduce it fully.

In order to begin this community effort, I am engaging several Korean language learning forums online to pool our collective efforts on this project.  The project will be broken down into different categories of vocabulary, such as Natural Disasters, Crime, Politics, Science, and so forth.  I envision numerous Korean learners posting lists of English words (or better yet, lists of English words and their Korean meanings) that they would like me to translate into Korean and include in the centrally managed vocabulary list.  In its end state, I expect between 2,000 and 5,000 important, high-quality vocabulary words will be generated in total.

This project is not geared towards beginners of the Korean language.  Everyone is welcome to contribute and all help will be accepted with open arms.  However, the project itself will generate vocabulary lists that are intended for intermediate learners or higher.  From time to time I will also publish posts of direct interest to the Korean language learning community.

As non-native speakers learning this difficult language, we’re all in it together.  Happy studying!
